The lovely butterfly on the picture above, is called Canoa de Tolda. It is an inheritage from Portugal, of course.These long, partly covered canoes, were used to carry mainly cargo, but also passengers, sitting on the cargo, on the large São Francisco river. It carries two large, gaff-rigged mainsails, and often a tiny jib. Masts are mainly out of grown trees, and carry their shape.
Canoas de Tolda have a large rudder on the stern.
