Maybe you didn't know. Maybe your part of the world doesn't care. But in Rio, we take this seriously. It is carnaval!

Cleaning up

As always after a period of absence from the boatshed, I start with a good cleaning of the place. Work needs to restart. But this week we have carnaval... So all the cleaning last week might not have been a good time investment, after all...

Protest for a Clean Bay

Last week I joined my sister and family to make a point against the pollution of our lovely Guanabara Bay. The lack of attention among public administration, politicians and THE POPULATION for this issue is outraging! 

Clean Botafogo Bay!

This is how our lovely Botoafogo Bay looked like before the "discovery" and colonization. A stunning view it must have been. Today the lovely landscape is modified and urban occupation has taken place. To a degree, it seems to add to the charm, in a way. Whichever way you think of it.

What is absolutely unacceptable, is the contamination of the Bay with brow, untreated sewage water. It is an environmental crime, which has many devastating effects on public health.

Tomorrow I will participate in a manifestation of indignation about the current state of the Botafogo and Guanabara Bay.

TikiRio - Velejada na Baia da Ilha Grande

The idea was to wake up early, and then meet Rogerio, in the boatshed, in Ramos, to discuss the further steps of construction. In part the plan worked as it should. Woke up early, met Rogerio...

But things came a bit different. In an surprise move Rogerio suggested a day sailing on TikiRio, in the Ilha Grande Bay. This unsuspected side jibe took me by surprise, so I ventured forward, and took the opportunity to hang out with Rogerio and Fred on their new Wharram Tiki 30, the TikiRio. It was a splendid summer day.

TikiRio now lies on a mooring, close to Angra dos Reis, in the Ilha Grande Bay. So we took my car, and arrived at the cat 2 hours later. A quick stop in a small road store, provided us with ice, beer, bread, fruit, cheese, tuna-mayonnaise, and peanuts. All we needed.

The boat was ready in a swift move, and we were out on the water, looking at the lovely scenery, and chatting away, about boats, boatbuilding, islands, beaches, winds,.... The start was marked by frickle changing wind. We found our way out to the Ilha Macacos, Baia Azul,... dropped anchor and enjoyed being there, while occasionally taking a swim in the refreshing water.

On our way back the wind picked up, and we were broad reaching swiftly at 7-8 knots across the bay. A very comfortable way to spend the day. And I never felt bad for not going into the boatshed! It all is a clear sign, that I need to get my boat into the water doubletime quick!

Rio de Janeiro has a new journal. THE BEACH is a new brazilian media platform for beach culture and the carioca lifestyle in Rio.

The monthly publication is distributed freely in selected hotels, restaurants, bars, gallerys and shops, and provides curated content for tourists and locals to enjoy what makes Rio the marvellous city.
