Green day

Green is easy to the eye. This is due to the long amplitude of the lightwaves reflected by green. Green has a calming effect on humans and other animals. Quite different than red, which is on the oposite side of the colour scala. Interestingly, the famous German poet, Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a precursor of the colour theory. I'm not sure why this came to me in this context.

This morning was green, which we spent in the Parque Lage, having breakfast with Kiko. After that, I took a dive in the green waters of Leblon beach. Heading home, whe passed by the market, where we found artichokes and Portuguese green wine, making a suitable ending for the day, at home.

Buggering-on

In the meanwhile, I keep buggering-on. The current jobs, all related to small finishing issues, don't really seem to yeld good pictures.

I've glued on guides for the navigation table.

I've sanded the outside of the cabin, in preparation for the second coat of epoxi.

I've cut small groves to the rear window, to permit water to drain out.

I gave the main sliding hatch a third coat of epoxi...

End of a nice day

The images that I set together from several others, appeal to some. I hope this one does too. It goes out to my brother, who had his birthday yesterday, and who lives right under the setting sun.

Boatbuilding - Continued

Yesterday I finally came back to actually work on Arpex. I continued to work on the entrance, by coating the washboardst in epoxi, and by finishing the "slotting" piece. The router came in handy, and allowed to achieve a decent finishing on the piece, which I had developed and glued together with the help of Jonas. Once coated it looked rather nice. Again I'm tempted to leave it with a clear finish, instead of painting it over.

The upper edge of the washboard will be cutt to fit only once all pieces are in place, to assure that it has a good fit with the sliding hatch, which needs to slide over the washboard to prevent water from dropping inside.

Inhotim Images - Continued

The red Mulungu Tree is making serious competition to Helio Oiticica's work... This is a common effect in Inhotim. Art competes with Nature? Or is it rather a composition, where the two elements add to each other? An intended question, I suppose. To me the effect is quite unique. A place for contemplation.

Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão, wife of Bernardo Paz, the man who has put Inhotim on the world map, has received an own pavillion. Here, art meets architecture in a most complete form. Her artwork, displayed inside and on top of the building stands up to the outer shell. Appropriately, pictures of the artworks, inside, are not allowed throughout the park.

Edgard de Souza's bronze sculptures are nicely displayed in Inhotim. I wonder what this one is looking for?

Yayoi Kasama's polished metal spheres, which sailed in hundreds on a small pond made a great impression on me. They caused a really odd, lasting impression, which I can't quite define. Which, kind of, summarizes the very purpose of contemporary art.

Widespread Panic - Pickin' up the pieces

Something wrong???

Adri and I came back from a great trip to the Contemporary Art Center Inhotim, located in a park in the vicinity of the tiny town of Inhotim, close to Belo Horizonte. Bernardo Paz has created a unique place, which unites his passions for nature and art. A great place for contemplation, questionning, or simply wondering whether there is something wrong.

And there is great food too.

The right thing

After spending a most agreable evening at Joel's place, where we shared a bottle of wine, when we left to drive home, I remembered that the right thing to do is to let Adri drive.

This was the right decision, indeed, because we were stopped at the "Blitz da Lei Seca", where Adriana could pass through the test without any aprehension. Adri doesn't drink alcohol.

Had I been on the wheel, our trip to Inhotim would be ruined.

About four weeks ago we had already the same situation (below). Adri is becomming a routined tester of the procedures at the "Lei Seca".

I'll have to go and see for myself. We are heading to Inhotim this time.

Ooops!!! I did it again!

Law inforcement is finally getting to Rio de Janeiro. One of the highest impact programms implemented, is the "Blitz da Lei Seca". It is a program focussed on educating divers to not drink and drive. High fines and frequent controls are a real incentive to have a dedicated driver or else, take the cab.

Stefano's visit

My head is already on the way to the Inhotim Contemporary Art Center, CACI - Centro de Arte Contemporânea de Inhotim. Which is why I didn't mind the rain, which would not permit epoxi work. Stefano's visit was therefore more than welcome. The last time Stefano saw the boat, was when he helped me to transport the boat from Itaipu to Ramos Yacht Club. As a welcome gift, Stefano has received a Paraty style paddle. It suits him well. The paddle would make a good fit to Stefano's little canoe.

Inhotim

About 7 hours drive inland from Rio de Janeiro, in the State of Minas Geraes, the art collector Bernardo Paz, has created one of the most stunning collections of centemporary art. Big sized works of renomed contemporary artists of the international art scene are exposed in midst of a fabulous park.

It has been a while since I wish to see the place. I finally plan to go there soon.

Washboards

On Saturday, Jonas joined me to work on the entrance to the cabin. We did a little fairing on the sliding hatch and worked out the washboards. It is tricky work, which takes a while.

Arpoador

One of the fondest memories I have of my father, is when he took us kids to the Arpoador Rock and jumped with us from the rocks, to swim back to the beach.

He loved the view from this place.

Remembering my father

Yesterday would have been my father's birthday. Today is everybody's father's day. A good day to remember.

Thanks for giving me life, love for the sea and sailing - and everything else.

Wherever he is, I am sure that his spirit roams free - Kurt Rudolf Ulrich Mirow.

O Tahiti Nui Freedom

Gary Dierking has posted about an interesting project from Thaiti. It is a 50 foot tacking outrigger. The boat is undertaking a long transoceanic journey from Thaiti to China. There is a website which tracks the journey: http://otahitinui.com/vaa/en

In several aspects O Tahiti Nui Freedom has similarities with Arpex.

Today I went to see the early morning view from the Arpoador Rock for myself.

Since I woke up at 6 am. anyway, I took my bike and went for a ride. Rio showed off its most magnifiscent side, and I stood in awe. I made it all the way to Leblon, and even took a quick dip in our placid Atlantic. Living in Rio is priceless.
