Why the West Forgot the Tacking Outrigger

Every generation of engineers likes to believe it is creating something new.

Yet engineering advances are often less about invention than rediscovery. Ideas appear, mature, disappear, and sometimes return centuries later when viewed from a different perspective.

The tacking outrigger may be one such idea.

Long before European exploration reached the Pacific, Polynesian navigators had developed sophisticated sailing craft capable of remarkable ocean passages. Their achievements remain among the greatest accomplishments in the history of seamanship. They crossed immense distances with vessels built from natural materials, guided by an intimate understanding of wind, waves, stars and currents.

These craft were not primitive. They were highly refined engineering solutions, developed over generations of practical experience.

Among them were two distinct concepts: the shunting proa and the tacking outrigger.

Today, the shunting proa is perhaps the better known. Its unique ability to reverse direction without changing bow and stern has fascinated naval architects for more than a century.

The tacking outrigger has attracted far less attention.

This is curious.

From a modern sailor's perspective, the tacking outrigger behaves in a remarkably familiar way. The bow remains the bow, the stern remains the stern, and changes of course are accomplished by ordinary tacking. The sailing experience is immediately recognisable to anyone accustomed to contemporary yachts.

Why, then, did this branch of development receive so little attention in the West?

Perhaps the answer lies not in the boats themselves, but in the history of navigation.

The Polynesians did not develop a single universal vessel. They developed different boats for different missions.

A shunting proa is exceptionally well suited to repetitive point-to-point voyages, such as sailing from a village to fishing grounds and returning along essentially the same route. The vessel shunts at the ends of the journey, but otherwise maintains a highly efficient sailing configuration.

Exploration presents a different challenge.

An exploratory voyage rarely follows a predetermined route. Weather changes, destinations evolve, unfamiliar coastlines appear, and decisions must constantly be revised. Under these conditions, a vessel that behaves conventionally under sail offers practical advantages. The crew can rely on familiar sailing instincts while adapting continuously to changing circumstances.

Seen from this perspective, the shunting proa and the tacking outrigger are not competing designs.

They are complementary solutions to different operational problems.

Western naval architecture, however, evolved largely independently of this tradition.

Its history followed another path: from the monohull to the modern racing yacht, and later to catamarans and trimarans. During this evolution, the tacking outrigger remained largely outside mainstream development.

This paper does not suggest that Western yacht design chose the wrong path.

Modern sailing craft represent extraordinary achievements of engineering.

The question is simply whether an alternative branch of sailing evolution still has something to offer.

That question became the starting point of the Nautilus project.

The objective was never to recreate a traditional Polynesian canoe.

Nor was it to demonstrate a superior multihull.

Instead, the project asks a simpler question.

If modern engineering were to revisit the tacking outrigger—not as an historical curiosity, but as a contemporary design problem—what might be learned?

The answer is unlikely to be found by copying traditional boats.

Nor will it emerge by ignoring them.

It lies somewhere between respect for accumulated knowledge and the willingness to question established assumptions.

Engineering progresses by building upon successful ideas.

Occasionally, progress also comes from rediscovering ideas that history quietly left behind.

The tacking outrigger deserves to be examined in that spirit.

The Nautilus Papers are an invitation to that exploration.

Arpex Expanded to 40 ft = Nautilus 40


Here is the new proposition for an extended version of Arpex. A boat offering thrilling sailing and a full fabin with stading headroom, a toilet, a comfortable double bunk, and two additional, while having a full dining table with seating and navigation are with forward view. I bet this would be a blast to sail, while offering creature comforts for coastal cruises.
