Arara

My canoe Arara again. Taken form my brothers boat. Beeing a well balanced canoe, I can let her run without paddle action. I just need to trim the rig right. The rig can be canted to any direction using the lateral and front stay system. I have recently upgraded the canoe with some cam cleats on the stays to make trimming easiyer.

Pressure

One of my paintings of the pressure series.

It is iron-oxidation on sail canvas (Dacron). I have used this technique in seceral portraits. And also on landscapes. Mainly landscapes of Rio de Janeiro, as seen form the sea. I usually leave some structural elements of the sail, as sawings, batten pockets and else visible. Makes a nice visual, structural effect and increases texture and nautical reference.

Itaipu Beach

Pictures taken on Saturday on Itaipú Beach. To be frank, I see dificulties in launching the boat here. Unless it is a calm weekday on winter time. It is just too crowded on weekends. I also guess the boat would have to stay on the beach for a day or two for assembling.

Ok, launching is certainly not a problem I need to solve now. But thinking about it eases my anxiety until we actually start building.

Adele in Rio

Yes, I know, it's been a long time ago. But Adele has been in Rio, and I went out to take a picture of it against the Sugar Loaf. It was, actually, carnival last year. It is a beautyfull yacht and it was an inspiring sight. She is something like 150ft. long!

I love the variety of Heliconia flowers. They are typical for South America and abundant around here.


The old botanical drawings are also a strong reference in my live. From early on I have loved Margareth Mee's aquarels of Orchids, Bromelias and other tropical flowers.

Angra dos Reis Yacht Club

Sun down at Angra dos Reis Yacht Club. It is a dependance of the Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club, and has been the main access point to Ilha Grande. It offers moorings to keep the boat over a few weeks.

Arpoador - Arpex

This is the actual P"edra do Arpodor", also nicknamed "ARPEX", mostly by surfers as it is a preferred point break. It is a rock point between Copacabana and Ipanema Beach. Arpoador means The Harponeer, since it is the point where people would watch for whales when whaling was still going on. The bay of Rio, Guanabara Bay was full of whales until 1850.

Carnaval 2

Some of our lovely carioca samba dancers have become worried about their dresses, due to all the rain. I guess... The precious textiles do not take water well. Therefore they opted for a all natural "dress up". The famous "tapa sexo", which is all there was as a planned "dress", gave way, due to the rain-water (and maybe sweat and other moisture), which softened the glue to keep it in place.

Think about it: Our original indians, Tupiniquins, didn't need clothes. Do you think she does?

God bless our country, Brasil. Where we can see these images without someone crying out loud in ofence! God bless liberty of speech and expression and art! And carnival too!!!

Rain. Heavy, tropical, abundant, interminable rain.

This years carnival is all about rain. Since yesterday it has been raining heavily, abudanly and permanently. No blocks, no samba schools for me. I'm watching the show on TV, internet. Dreaming about finally boatbuilding, and where I want to take my boat once its sailing. Google Earth is helping me out over the long hours at home. Blogging, watching the DVD (Star Wars, Cidade Baixa, Deconstructing Harry, O Homem que Desafiou o Diabo, O Segredo da Flor Dourada, ...). Haven't left home yet, since I came back from Itaipú, on saturday. Which was the last sunny day. The picture abve was Saturday morning, about 07:30am.

Rio sailing in 1915

Esta imagem foi tirada por meu bisavô no ano de 1915, 93 anos atrás. Um linda imagem do Pão de Açúcar, com dois veleiros abertos, velejando regatta. São parecidos com o Caledonian Yawl do Charles Watson. Mandei esta foto para ele. Ele tem um Caledonian Yawl. Um pronto, no qual ele já me convidou para velejar. Foi um passeio muito agradável. Alem deste, chamado Anie, Charles tem mais dois em construção.

This image was taken by my great-grandfather, in 1919. It shows the Sugar Loaf with two open boats competing in a small regatta. The boats ressemble caledonian Yawls. These are fine boats. I got to know them through Charles, my arts teacher. Charles Watson took me out for a afternoon sail on his beautyfull, magnificently crafted boat, Anie. Charles' boat can be seen in the image below. It was taken the day we sailed, about august 2007. The year before He invited me to sail on Nessie a similar, but smaler, open boat with one mast, balanced-lug rigged boat. It is kept in the Marina da Glória.
